The lack of variable body types was something I particularly disliked about SRTT/SRIV's character creator. I've never seen a game allow for such a range between very thin to very fat bodies and I can only imagine that this is very hard to do because most games only allow for a very narrow range in body types. Saints Row 2 has the best character creation tool that I've ever come across and also the widest variety of body types I've ever seen. It's not often that a game allows you to independently customise your arms and legs.

You could even customise your walking animation.Īnywhoo as others have mentioned, Dragon's Dogma is probably some of my favourite non-MMO character creation tools I've come across. Saints Row 2's character customisation is vastly superior to the latter two. I don't know any other games that let you change your character on the fly like that. You can change your gender and race at will, you can make yourself a fat dude or buff lady, and you can pick from a whole bunch of outfits. Saints Row 3/4 has the best character creation. I guess it's worth noting before people get confused, I'm not talking about Mass Effect-style character creation, I'm talking about customizing an existing character. Moreover, the game presented most of this customization as progressed-based unlockables, which got me huge into the game despite the fact that I do not care about snowboarding.Īre there more modern games that come close to this level of customization and present that customization in a similarly addictive way? I have come to Street Fighter IV to try to satiate this want (pros: some nice costumes, cons: not very customizable, costs real money $$$$$) as well as Bayonetta (pros: not for real money, plentiful, cons: also not very good).

SSX 3 had costumes for every occasion for every character: I could light my head on fire, ride a paper bag, wear a bikini in the snow, or just find the right combination of boots, bottoms and top to look like a fairly normal person. SSX 3 was pretty awesome (in general, but also) for character customization.
